It was revealed this week that Ruby Rose’s character of Kate Kane in The CW series Batwoman will not be recast after her sudden departure at the end of Season 1. Instead, showrunner Caroline Dries has decided to erase Kate Kane from the storyline and introduce a new character to the series.
Rose also shared that she lived in Vancouver for a year working on the mountains when she was 18 because she loved the city so much. This decision was not easy for Dries, considering that the Kate Kane character is connected to every other character on the show. However, according to TV Line, Dries opted for the more difficult path and will introduce a new lead character in Season 2 named Ryan Wilder.
WOW! It looks like Ruby Rose's Kate Kane will be wiped from the show of #Batwoman completely? With a new character taking over the Cape and Cowl. I think this is a bad idea, just recast Kate. Kate is Batwoman.

Here is the apparent casting description for the replacement. 🦇🦇🦇 pic.twitter.com/tgE52bHgYp
“To be honest with you, I did consider the ‘soap opera version’ [of recasting] for a hot minute, because selfishly we already had a couple episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless,” Dries told Julie Plec at the ATX Festival At Home Q&A. “But upon further reflection — and I think [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.’”
Dries says that taking this route will pay respect to everything that Rose put into the character of Kate Kane. At the same time, it also helps the audience because they are not asking fans to address “the elephant in the room.”
There is still no word yet on who has been cast as Ryan Wilder, and it’s possible they are still looking for the right actress. However, Warner Bros. and The CW has confirmed that another LGBTQ actress will get the part and the character will be a lesbian like Kane.
According to Decider, a leaked casting breakdown of the new character describes Ryan Wilder as a woman in her 20s who “is about to become Batwoman.” The casting notice says that Ryan is “likeable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed,” and she is “nothing like Kate Kane.”

“With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits,” reads the character description. “A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Ruby Rose did briefly address the recent report that she left Batwoman because of the long hours required for the role, and because the series was shot in Vancouver. Rose told her Instagram followers not to believe everything they read from anonymous sources online.
Rose also shared that she lived in Vancouver for a year working on the mountains when she was 18 because she loved the city so much.
