Page Six revealed earlier today that Gwyneth Paltrow was doing her part in the fight against COVID-19. The outlet picked up on an announcement from the Contagion actress in which she revealed her donation to a coronavirus relief fund.
Reportedly, the actress auctioned the gown she wore at the Oscars 20 years ago. Paltrow participated in Leonardo DiCaprio’s All-In challenge, which gives fans the opportunity to win experiences by celebrities.
Paltrow’s contribution was the auction of her Calvin Klein dress that she wore to the Academy Awards in 2000. In addition to helping out communities in the United States, the entrepreneur claimed her contribution was fitting because a lot of 90s fashion is currently coming back into style.
These comments are in contrast to some of her prior remarks, however, in which she claimed the designer outfit wasn’t special and was actually kind of boring. Paltrow claimed in the past that it was one of the worst outfits she ever wore. She described it as “just ok.”
Fans on social media weren’t particularly thrilled by the idea of donating a dress. One person, in particular, stated the entire idea was a joke, and she should’ve just donated to charity rather than selling a dress she no longer wants.
Another person claimed their uncle started a COVID-19 challenge to help out people who need assistance, and Paltrow is talking about Calvin Klein dresses. The comments didn’t stop there either, with another user adding that she should’ve just made a donation, rather than give away a dress she can’t wear anymore.
Whether it was a worthy donation or not, many other social media users came to bat for Paltrow and stated she was doing the right thing. Regardless of its ostensible merit, this wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity chipped in to help the world fight against COVID-19.
Ellen DeGeneres recently announced a $1 million donation to a coronavirus relief fund. Matthew McConaughey, as well, revealed that he was going to go to a University of Texas football game with one lucky fan.
The proceeds of the auction will go to several different charities, including America’s Food Fund, The World Central Kitchen, No Kid Hungry, and Meals on Wheels.
