According to a report from Movie Web, Hellboy’s recent reboot didn’t do very well at the box office. The film finished its initial run in the domestic box office with a meager result, barely pulling in $22,000,000. The movie garnered $21.9 million in total.
Lionsgate, the production company who created it, is said to have not even gotten its production budget back. When it first opened in April, it earned $12,000,000. Thankfully, however, Hellboy only cost $50,000,000 to make, so the film wasn’t a total disaster.
In comparison to The Avengers films, the movie didn’t cost much, but still, it didn’t do as well as fans had hoped. Moreover, in many cases, when movies don’t perform to optimal standards in theaters in the United States and in Canada, movie-makers can typically hope that the Asian market will pick it up, but this wasn’t the case.
This is a big dilemma for Lionsgate, considering they have released a string of poorly performing movies, such as Robin Hood, which was very costly to make. It didn’t do perform at the box office last year when it came out.
When it was first announced, fans were hopeful that Guillermo Del Toro would be working with Ron Perlman again, but it didn’t pan out that way.
Interestingly, the first few Hellboy films didn’t do that well either in comparison to other superhero movies. The first one earned $100 worldwide and was produced on a $66,000,000 budget. While it certainly wasn’t a failure, it wasn’t a massive and smashing success either.
Reported by Movie Web, with their numbers acquired from The Numbers, The second sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, did very well when it came out, earning $160,3 million from a budget of $85 million. However, according to Movie Web, the production of the film was very difficult and problematic.
Hellboy didn’t fare well with critics either, earning just a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For now, it looks as though fans won’t get to see Hellboy on the screen again, however, it’s possible that something could come up again in the future.
