Disney Shatters Their Own Box Office Record This Weekend With The Lion King Reboot

According to a report from Variety, Disney just reached a major milestone when they announced they had gone over $7.67 billion, which was previously set by them as well in 2016 with $7.61 billion. The amounts are yearly.

Moreover, this past weekend, the movie-making juggernauts were the first to cross the $5 billion mark overseas as well, reaching $5.09 billion. Multiple outlets pointed out that Disney still has a few more big films on their way, including Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Maleficent, and Frozen 2.

Currently, the company has six of the biggest films of 2019, including Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, and Aladdin. According to Variety, after Disney purchased Fox’s film assets near the beginning of the year, the studio now has in their possession approximately 40% of the market share in North America.

With that said, however, Disney has had a few flops, including Dumbo and Dark Phoenix. The Lion King is making its way through the box offices right now as well, staying in the top position, despite facing competition against Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

It was reported earlier that Quentin’s movie managed to score a $40 million opening weekend despite being in the same weekend as one of Disney’s biggest films in years, barring the Avengers franchise.

During a past interview, Quentin addressed competition with Disney in an interview with Howard Stern regarding his last flick, The Hateful Eight, stating that Disney chose to release their movie at the same time as his. While Disney is continuing to do well, other film industry analysts have posed the question: what will Disney do when they run out of movies to remake?

At some point, the studio has to start pushing itself to make original content, rather than capitalize on pre-established brands such as comic books and past legendary movies with a large following. As it was noted above, one of Disney’s next Star Wars movies is on its way as well, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.

Their last film starring Donald Glover, Solo: A Star Wars Story, didn’t perform as well at box offices. Analysts believed it had to do with Star Wars burnout, as studios had just finished releasing successful Star Wars movies, including The Last Jedi as well as The Force Awakens.
